Subject: Hope he has the sense to run...
Here you have what becomes the standard formula for most shows in the 80's (without 99% of the flubs that become common as the decade goes on)
Sure wish they had kept Alabama in the rotation with more regularity it was such a rockin tune and gave Bobby a running start.
A first set that builds in intensity (And only Jerry could build intensity with a ballad) includes a rare Minglewood set closer.
A classic Scarlet>Fire>Est>Eyes
Steady drums and a pretty trippy space with like Elephants or whales or something?
NFA> Wharf> Sugar Mag (Got weary of NFA to close shows but like it here coming out of space.
Also fun to open a 2nd set)
Dang BRENT does have some out there backing vocals during Wharf Rat!
There is at least one complaint from a reviewer about the 3 minute encore but it's Don't Ease IMO-I would have traded a Baby Blue for a Don't Ease every once in a while.
Subject: The good and forgotten 80's
Put your eyes on these one, it has an absolutely superb sound and a good song selection. The 80's Grateful Dead is my favorite.
Subject: eyes is a bit "too" fast
its so fast they "skip" some words

Subject: decent leads
Scarlet Begonias>Fire On The Mountain from the Uptown is very fine.
Subject: wow - nice show
Really enjoyed this tape. Thanks.
Subject: naysay no more
nice clean sound. gotta love a good "it must have been the roses"
Subject: 9-2-1978 fire
9-2-1978 You must be kidding yourself Donna ruined so many shows woth her lame singing. Lets be real when you listen to the tapes from that error it wasn't pretty. The boys later admitted it was a mistake to bring her on.
Subject: NFA>Wharf Rat
The second set is outstanding. Quality audio is also a huge plus.

Can only imagine what a good stereo system could do with this.
5 stars, no hesitation.
Subject: recording extraordinaire
gotta give credit to the sound quality on this one!!!
Subject: great groove and punch on this night
Subject: Amazing '81
I love everything about '81. I think Brent felt totally at home. There was that special magic happening between he and Jerry. Clear for all to hear in FOTD.

Subject: GREAT MATRIX-TIGHT BAND!!!
This is a superb sounding matrix recording!! The band is "on" this evening!Very good song selection for 1981. Watch out for the abrupt cut in LOSER. Thanks to all involved for posting this gem!!!!!!!
Subject: Just came from CA. To start tour.
This was a great show. Called home to tell my mom i see her in 2 weeks. When the boys hit N.Y.C at MSG. She tolled me a girl name Peggy called. Well I fell in love with a girl name Peggy. I know it was love at the time we meet. Last time I saw her was SF 4 days before after a Jerry show at the Key Stone,SF. We said good bye. I had just spent the last 5 weeks with in Santa Cruz. And I really fell in love with her. So I called her and she was back in Boston. So we where to meet again. On her 19th birthday. We meet and off to the Boston show than to Hartford for her birthday 3/15/81. We have now been together for almost 31 years. With 2 great kid. Chris 25 and Jessie 23 and she making me a grandfather. Peggy I love you more than words can tell. The uptown was one of the best shows I have been to out of 258. Thank you the Grateful Dead for helping me find my LoveLight. My kids have been to shows and both love the Band. Hope the music keeps coming for many years to come. Thanks Richard.C
Subject: Good, not Great
I'm a much bigger fan of the following night's show. However, being an '81 show, this one has some very good moments as well. The most memorable part for me was the post-drums NFA>Wharf Rat.
As they say, take what you need [of this show] and leave the rest :)

great stuff! 2nd show of a 3 night run. 2nd show of the tour. Brent shines. I really love his B3 playing. I knew some older heads in Chicago at one time and these shows were mythical to them. something having to do with Phil being his usual boozed out self at the time and running late getting to the gig. I don't know if there's any truth to it, just thought i'd add to the myth that is the GratefulDead.
Subject: my response to penguin's (good) question...
been a fan of this music since high school (early 1990s). never caught the original dead lineup live, but i always loved the music. i would've loved to have seen a show with Jerry, but unfort. i didn't.
recently, id been able to see two of the original members in their current tour, i felt very speacial feelings between crowd and band that i've never felt before in concert. organized chaos? for sure. i felt to be part of a bigger picture and part of the music of what seemed to be timeless senses. among the chaos, there was an extremely human element i felt, especially the need to feel physically close to the ones you love/you're with, since it's so chaotic.
THAT SAID, i took my wife to a following show, giving me tears thinking about it now, but i just wanted to hold her and be as phyically close to her as possible the whole time.
that's what it's been for me.
Subject: Great show I would love to have been there but.....
Whats up with the 3 and a half minute encore???
I would have been pretty disappointed with that.
Other than that i have no complaints really good space> not fade away.
Subject: Cosmic tones
it has been and always will be the cosmic tidal waves of tonal forces unleased by this ragtag band known as the Grateful Dead, that seems to cut thru reality and transcend the time space continum, catching us all in a whirlpool of joy and extacsy. Joy is the ears that hear.....
"If Music be the food of love.....play on!"

Subject: A message for penguin777
Dear friend penguin777:
I find myself attempting to answer a question whose nature is often referred to by the ancient Sages as: "To those who know, no answer is necessary; to those who do not know, no answer is possible." Nevertheless, I will attempt to answer your question. What makes people go so crazy over the Grateful Dead and their music? The answers are many, but include this one: the Grateful Dead provided the "soul fuel" for the major events in the lives of so very many of us, while the music and the lyrics kept us on our toes, kept us thinking about what we were living and why we were living it. The energy was good, the music great, the band there for us (a fact for which most of us, myself included, are quite grateful indeed). Again, if you do not understand, a quick note by me probably won't make you understand; but the Grateful Dead were and are an integral part of what we lived, what we live now, and who we are.
Beyond that, all I can say is this: "If you get confused, listen to the music play....." :-)
Subject: Holy shit
Mydland and Garcia at 3:50 in Wharf Rat....2 voices meant to harmonize!!!!
Subject: i dk no
please someone explain to me why so many people go nuts over this stuff
Subject: alabama Getaway
jerr only seems to nail the song (rarely)
Subject: Not Fade Away
This show has one of my favorite NFA's. I like the mellow intro with Brent playing the Fender Rhodes.
Subject: woo hoo
classic Bobby at the end of suger Mag! Great show!
Subject: clean energetic good sounding show...a nice surprise
not a *stellar* blow your mind kind of show but great sound combined with good vocals from Jerry and some inspired playing make this a surprisingly good stream. A good jam for getting your stuff done.
